"When achievement leads to self-esteem, we know we have given our campers a priceless developmental asset."

-Heidi Aldous-Fick, Director of Recreational Services

Dear Parents,

Letting your child go to an overnight camp for the first time or for the third or fourth time can be an experience that leads to concerns and anxieties. It is a difficult task for parents to say goodbye to their children who are venturing off, away from parents, siblings and familiar routines and surroundings. As a parent and experienced camp director, I know these feelings are quite normal and appropriate. Therefore, at Kamp A-Kom-Plish we have taken some measures to make you feel at ease.

Your child will experience a wonderful time at Kamp A-Kom-Plish. Camp is a time for children to meet new friends, develop self-confidence and have a great time in nature participating in fun and enriching activities. We have energetic, responsible staff and they have planned for your child in every way imaginable. Experiences at camp are developmental in nature and lead to personal growth, social independence and maturity.

Some suggestions to help you and your child prepare for camp are:

  • Let your child know where they are going and for how long. Let them help in packing for camp. Discuss all the great activities they will be involved in while at camp like horseback riding, swimming, sports and games. Let them know that other children the same age will be at camp and they will make a lot of new friends!
  • Sending a family photograph is a good idea. Pack it in their suitcase or knapsack and show your child where it is. For some children this will help when feelings of homesickness occur.

We hope these suggestions make the separation process easier for the whole family.

Sincerely,
Heidi Aldous-Fick
